![]() | Rafael Perera is the Director of the Statistics group in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences. His main research focus is the study of monitoring for the management of long-term conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. Rafael currently supervised DPhil projects looking at biomarkers associated with healthy ageing, prediction models to identify children with serious bacterial infection, the use of tests in Paediatric care, and how to improve the uptake of Clinical Prediction rules in Clinical Practice. |
![]() | Emily McFadden is a senior statistical epidemiologist, leading on the Big Data Epidemiology module. Emily's current research interests include the use of large routine databases in medical research and research design. |

His research focuses on the development and application of statistical methods to studies in primary care, and main areas of current interest include diagnosis and clinical risk prediction, and the application of meta-analytic methods. |

One strand of her research is investigating symptom profiles and experiences prior to diagnosis, mainly in cancer, and another focuses on methodological and statistical issues of large or routinely collected databases. ![]() | Susannah Fleming is a senior quantitative researcher and module coordinator for Essential Medical Statistics. Susannah's research focuses on monitoring and diagnosis, particularly using "vital signs" such as heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen levels, temperature, blood pressure, and capillary refill time. She is keen to supervise students considering research on monitoring and diagnosis and has particular experience in systematic reviewing and meta-analysis, observational research, and diagnostic accuracy studies, and so would welcome students considering any of these methodologies. |
![]() | Jason Oke is a senior statistician whose research focuses on the diagnosis of cancer in primary care, overdiagnosis and overtreatment. Jason is interested in methods for evaluating monitoring and screening programmes, test evaluation and diagnostic accuracy. He is study statistician for the SCAN pathway and IDEAL (Artificial Intelligence and Big Data for Early Lung Cancer Diagnosis). I am a statistical reviewer for Emergency Medicine, Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology and Colorectal Disease Journal. I have recently taken on a role as editorial board member for Nature Scientific Reports. Jason also teaches on modules Statistical Computing with R and Stata and the Introduction to Statistics for Health Care Researchers. |
