The three Cs: causes, consequences and cures

The system we have for studying, approving and using drugs and medical devices is broken. Drug regulation doesn’t work. If it did, our prescription drugs would not be the third leading cause of death.

Harms of drugs and devices are understudied, and unwelcome results are suppressed because of financial and guild interests. Millions are harmed while clinicians are guided by flawed research and guidelines. Conversely, benefits of drugs and devises are often much exaggerated through biased designs, selective reporting of results and other manipulations. As all of this is well known, the big question is why so little has been done to remedy the situation.

At this symposium, we will focus on these issues and discuss how working together on possible solutions can overcome a broken system.
